Part of the Parisian satirical press, Le Cri De Paris began issuing weekly publications in January 1897. Barring interruption for World War I the journal ran for almost forty years and only ceased publication altogether in 1940.
Its original publisher was Louis-Alfred Natanson, who, with his brother, Thadee, co-directed La Revue Blanche. In early years the journal served as a excellent vehicle to solicit the Natanson Brothers’ numerous projects. Unlike it’s more high-brow cousin (LRB), Le Cri de Paris was thick with text text with only the occasional small illustration mixed in.
The range of subjects was wide, including politics, finances, sports, new artists and theater reviews. From August 1898 through June 1902, a young Cappiello often provided a black-and-white cover or back page drawsings including some theatrical caricatures which represent some of the artist’s earliest published work. The long list of contributors was a "Who's Who" of contemporary writers and artists including the authors:
Audebrand (Philibert) | Bonnefon (Jean de) | Boulenger (Marcel) | Castellane (Marquies de) | Donnay (Maurice) | Dubois (Felix) | Feydau (Georges) | Fierens-Gevaert | Franc-Nohain | Gavault (Paul) | Germain (Auguste) | Guetary (Jean) | Guiches (Gustave) | GYP | Houx (Henri des) | Lorrain (Jean) | Maizeroy (Rene) | Maurras (Rene) | Mitchell (Robert) | Mitty (Robert de) | Montesquiou (Comte de) | Montjoyeux | Nion (Francois de) | Peledan (Josephin) | Rebell (Hugues) | Joseph-Renaud (J.) | Saunier (Charles) | Schroeder (J.) | Talmeyer (Maurice) | Uzanne (Octave) | Valdagne (Pierre) | Veber (Pierre)
