Né en 1785 ou 1786 à Newport (Rhode Island).
Mort en 1862 à Washington.

XIXe siècle. Américain. Peintre de portraits, natures mortes.

Élève du portraitiste et graveur Edward Savage entre 1800 et 1805, il travailla à Londres entre 1805 et 1812, sous la direction de Benjamin West, Charles Leslie et de Washington Allston. Il passa quarante ans à Washington et y fit les portraits de nombreux personnages éminents. Il est aussi connu pour avoir fait les portraits de chefs indiens venus en 1821 à Washington. En dehors de ses portraits, il est l'auteur de Vanités, de natures mortes en trompe l'œil, ce qui est très exceptionnel aux États-Unis.
