Raymond Peynet became a freelance artist and illustrator after attending art school. His first commercial work was produced for Tolmer an ad agency in Paris. After marrying Denise Damour in 1930 Peyent took on additional work with several French magazines including; Le Rire, Rire A Deux, Paris Magazine, The Boulevardier and others.

In 1942, while waiting on an appointment with a collegue Peynet envisioned a new concept… a little violinist with long hair playing alone in front of the bandstand and a girl listening to him.

Later the violinist would become a poet and the girl his love. Thereafter Peynet’s concept would emerge with his signature characters for -Les Amoureux- (The Lovers), two simple drawn figures, whose charming pictures have delighted lovers all over the world. Peynet’s characters were a resounding success and he quickly become a most popular and beloved French illustrator. Over the Course of his career Peynet composed over 6000 pictures of 'The Lovers'. Peynet died on January 14th of 1999… just shy of Valentine’s Day.
