William Andrew 'Willy' Pogany
Born: August 24, 1882 in Szeged, Hungary
Died: 1955 in New York City, New York
Willy Pogany was born near Budapest and spent his childhood there. Later he attended the Budapest Technical School and the Academy of Art.
Of his life, Mr. Pogany has written that he was born of poor parents; the family moved to Budapest where his father died, leaving the family destitute. He was therefore obliged to do odd jobs for his living at a very early age. When at High School and later at the Technical University, where he studied Engineering, he worked his way through by tutoring other students. His love for painting and drawing drove him finally to leave the University for the Art School. Later he went to Munich and to Paris to continue his studies.
In his formative years he was greatly influenced by Chinese and Japanese art, also by illuminated manuscripts and Hungarian Peasant Art. In 1906 he went to London and started illustrating books. He came to the United States in 1915, settled down here permanently and became an American citizen. In England he married Lillian Rose Doris, by whom he had two sons.
In America Mr. Pogany married a second time, Elaine Cox, a writer. He has illustrated over one hundred books, produced a great number of paintings, portraits, and murals, etchings and engravings, water colors, and pen-and-inks.
William Andrew Pogany designed many theatrical productions, and was for several years Art Director for Hollywood Motion Picture Studios. He is also an architectural designer and sculptor. Among his awards are the following: Gold Medals from Budapest, Leipzig, Panama Pacific Exposition at San Francisco, 1915. Silver Medal of Honor, New York Society of Architects, 1923. Willy Pogany lived his later years in New York City. He died there in 1955.
