Kent, Rockwell
Born Tarrytown Heights, New York 1882
Died Plattsburgh, New York 1971
R. Kent studied with William Merritt Chase, Kenneth Hayes Miller, Robert Henri, and Abbott Thayer and attended Columbia School of Architecture. His paintings and graphic works often depict the stark, rugged aspects of nature and reflect his travels to Greenland, Alaska, and South America.
Kent's style is characterized by sharp contours and bold simple forms. Work as an illustrator includes satirical and humorous drawings for Vanity Fair and many other magazines, advertisements for Rolls-Royce, and drawings for numerous classics such as Moby Dick, Beowulf, Canterbury Tales, and the works of Shakespeare.
Rockwell Kent also illustrated his own books, which include Voyaging Southward From the Strait of Magellan, N by E, and an autobiography, It's Me O Lord.
