Jugend was an illustrated weekly published by George Hirth's printing works in Munich, Germany. With relatively few pages (approx 20 +/1) the publication achieved success with novel and fashionable colored lithographic covers and witty cartoons.
The artistic style portrayed in the magazine was a Germano/Austrian version of the popular European (particulaly French) Art Nouveau. As artist after artist found his beginning in Jugend the name of the art movement "Jugendstil," which means "style of youth" in German, was taken from the magazine's name which was in many ways its progenitor.
Still, it is worth noting that 'Jugendstil' predated the magazine Jugend in Bavaria. The first major artist of the style was Emil Hansen (later called Nolde), who had been teaching ornamental design in St. Gall after January 1892. He met Georg Hirth in 1895, and discussed the publication Jugend with him. From this short meeting, Hansen was destined to design the rich ornamenture and designs for its pages.
