" Vallotton's 'Les amateurs d'estampes' advertisment for Ed. Sagot from of the 3rd issue of L'Escarmouche "
An iconic image the 'Print Enthusiasts' orig. cut in wood by Felix Vallotton advertising Edmond Sagot's print shop and art gallery at 18, rue Guenegaud Paris. Sagot occupied this location from 1884 through 1894 where after he relocated to 39 bis, rue de Chateaudun.
This image was commissioned and used as an advertisement by the print dealer Edmond Sagot. Vallotton originally provided the image as a woodcut it repurposed in various formats by Sagot who early showed Vallotton's work and published Julius Meier-Graefe's monograph on the artist in 1898.
The crowd has gathered to examine prints exhibited in the windows of Sagot's establishment. The number and enthusiasm of the print collectors seen here no doubt are evidence of wishful thinking on the part of the artist and his dealer. (Vallotton and Goerg, 107.)
See Here for additional discussion. [VERY RARE]
