" Stumanu, Stum-A-Nu, Stum-ma-nu, A FlatHead Boy - Chinook "

This portrait was painted in 1838 or 1839 when Stumanu visited the East Coast. An exemplary student at the Methodist Missionary school in Salem Oregon, Stumanu toured eastern cities to assist the school’s missionary headmaster Reverend Jason Lee’s fund raising efforts. Unfortunatley Stumanu did not complete the trip and died in New York City – Lee raised over 40,000 dollars for his efforts.
